Ufish IN — User Manual

What is Ufish IN?

Ufish IN is a macOS app for designers who work with Adobe InDesign. It indexes your .indd files and generates visual previews so you can browse, search, and share your entire design library without ever opening InDesign.

Think of it as a visual portfolio manager — from chaos to portfolio, instantly.

💡 Independent — Ufish never uploads your files or uses your data to train AI models. Your work stays yours.

Installation

1
Download Ufish IN from the Mac App Store.
2
Open the app. On first launch, Ufish will ask for folder access permission — click Allow.
3
macOS may ask you to confirm access to your Documents or Desktop folder — click OK.
Note: Permissions are only requested once, on first launch.

Adding Files

Ufish scans folders you choose. It finds all .indd files inside and generates previews automatically.

1
Click the + (Add Folder) button in the toolbar.
2
Select a folder from the panel. Ufish will scan all subfolders recursively.
3
A progress bar appears at the bottom. Previews are generated in the background.
4
Click Stop (⌘.) at any time to cancel the scan.
Free plan limit: Up to 100 files. Upgrade to Starter or PRO for more.

Better Previews

For the highest quality previews, configure InDesign before scanning your files.

1
Open Adobe InDesign.
2
Go to Preferences → File Handling.
3
Enable "Always Save Preview Images with Documents".
4
Set size to Extra Large (1024×1024).
5
Re-save your InDesign files, then re-add the folder in Ufish.
Result: Crisp, high-resolution previews in your card grid and click-preview modal.

Card Grid

The main screen shows all your indexed files as a grid of cards. Each card shows a preview of the file's first page, the file name, and a row of action icons.

Cards use a 3:4 proportion so the preview fills most of the card.

Click Preview

Click the preview area of any card to open a larger preview modal. The modal shows:

  • A large high-resolution preview of the current page
  • Up to 3 page thumbnails at the bottom (depending on your plan)
  • Left/right arrows to navigate between pages
  • A page counter ("Page 1 of 3")
Tip: Click any thumbnail at the bottom to jump directly to that page.

Color Filter

The color filter shows only the dominant colors that actually appear in your current previews — no empty swatches.

1
Click the color palette icon in the toolbar.
2
A popover shows swatches of colors found in your previews.
3
Click a swatch to filter the grid by that dominant color.
4
Click again or press Clear to remove the filter.

Auto-Tags & Tag Sidebar

Ufish automatically reads your preview images using OCR and assigns category tags. No manual tagging required.

Auto-detected categories

Flyer · Poster · Business Card · Brochure · Catalog · Magazine · Newsletter · Invoice · Report · Menu · Banner · Label · Book · Certificate · Invitation · Ticket · Calendar

Auto-detected formats

A4 · A3 · A5 · Letter · DL · Square

Tag Sidebar

Click the tag sidebar icon on the right side of the toolbar to open a Finder-style panel on the right. Click any tag to filter the grid instantly.

Slideshow

Present your work with the built-in slideshow. Choose from two styles:

🖼
Frame
Clean full-screen slide presentation
📸
Photo
Stacked photo-style transition

Use the previous/next buttons to navigate manually, or press Play for autoplay. The fullscreen button expands the slideshow to fill your display.

File Information

Click the ℹ icon on any card to see detailed file metadata:

  • File name and path
  • File size
  • Creation and modification dates
  • Color profile
  • Color model

Share & Send

Click the upload arrow icon on any card to share the preview image — not the InDesign source file.

The native macOS share sheet opens, letting you send via Mail, Messages, AirDrop, or any other installed share target.

Privacy: Only the preview image is shared. Your original InDesign files are never sent.

Cloud Backup

Back up all your generated previews to your preferred cloud provider with one click.

1
Click the cloud icon in the toolbar.
2
On first use, choose your cloud provider: iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive.
3
Ufish backs up previews to a private Ufish Capsule folder inside your chosen provider.
4
A subtle animation plays while syncing. A quiet toast confirms when done.
Note: Only preview images are backed up — never your InDesign source files.

Troubleshooting

Previews are blurry or show a placeholder icon
InDesign hasn't saved a preview with the file. Open the file in InDesign, set Preferences → File Handling → Always Save Preview Images (Extra Large 1024×1024), re-save, and re-add the folder.
Only 1 preview page appears in the click-preview modal
Multi-page previews require the Starter or PRO plan. Free plan shows 1 page only. Upgrade via Help → Manage Subscription.
The app freezes while scanning a large folder
Press ⌘. (Stop) to cancel the scan. Try adding smaller subfolders instead of one large root folder.
Cloud backup shows no files backed up
Make sure you've chosen a folder that is inside your cloud provider's synced location (e.g., iCloud Drive). Only preview images are backed up, not InDesign source files.
Tags are not appearing for my files
Auto-tagging runs in the background after preview generation. Wait a few seconds after previews load, then open the tag sidebar or color filter popover to see the detected tags.
Subscription not restoring on a new Mac
Go to Help → Manage Subscription… and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID used to purchase.
